Highlights of Fez
Chouara Tannery A visit to Fez wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Chouara Tannery, one of the oldest tanneries in the world. Here you can see the traditional process of leatherworking that has remained unchanged for centuries. The leather hides are worked and dyed in a series of stone basins using natural ingredients. Although the smell takes some getting used to, it offers a fascinating insight into a centuries-old craft. Many kandoras, traditional Moroccan robes that can be found throughout the souks, are also made locally.
Bab Bou Jeloud This iconic blue gate is the entrance to the medina of Fez and a great place to start your exploration. Walk through and you’ll be greeted by the vibrant energy of the medina, where traders offer their wares, from spices to handmade carpets.
Mosques and Madrasahs Fez is home to some of the finest examples of Islamic architecture. Visit the Bou Inania Madrasah, a 14th-century Koranic school with impressive tilework and carvings. The tranquility you’ll find here is a wonderful contrast to the bustle of the streets outside.

Historical Capitals: Fez was the capital of Morocco from the 9th century until the early 20th century. It was followed by Marrakech and Meknes, and since 1912 Rabat has been the capital of Morocco.

University of Karueein: Fez is home to the oldest university in the world, the University of Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859 by Fatima al-Fihri. This university, which began as a mosque with adjoining madrassas, is still in use today and also houses one of the oldest libraries in the world.
